Matopeni Preparatory School's PledgePage
We want to build a school in the heart of Matopeni, a slum that is located in Nairobi, Kenya. Although the Kenyan Government have provided a national curiculuum, they refuse to help in any way to build the children a school as they do not offically recognise Matopeni.
A few years ago, one man, Stephen Okwaro, set up the Boston Self Help Group with the idea to create a school for the local children and give them a better future. At the moment their future is very bleak - many are still participants in child labour, prostitution or other illegal activities. With an education behind them, these wonderful children can go on to achieve fantastic things and provide properly for their familiies in the future. At the moment only 197 out of the 700 children needing education are receiving it. Their school is temporary: five small tin structures that are unuseable in hot weather as they head up tremendously, and unuseable in the rainy season as the classrooms are washed out. With the full support and help of the local community and our online volunteers, we are putting the dream of a proper school into reality. We now have architectural plans, but need to buy the plots to build the school on. Your donations, no matter how small, can make all the difference to these children. If you want further information on our project, please contact me: Christina Wright - Facilitator of the Matopeni online volunteers. I will happily answer any questions you may have.
